Route 85/Guadalupe River Bridges - San José, CA

These parallel 1,620-foot ten span bridges cross the Guadalupe River, local streets, Light Rail Transit tracks, and Santa Clara Valley Water District percolation ponds.

A-N West prepared bridge advanced planning studies, conducted seismic analysis, foundation analysis, conducted field surveys and geotechnical investigations, prepared a bridge hydraulic report, and prepared structures PS&E for the four-lane, continuous cast-in-place prestressed concrete (CIP/PS) box girder bridges on State Route 85 crossing the Guadalupe River.

A 231-foot arch span was incorporated into the design of each bridge's main span over the Guadalupe River.

A-N West coordinated with Caltrans District 4 and Division of Structures, and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA).

23rd Street Grade Separation - Richmond, CA

A-N West prepared complete PS&E for a complex grade separation project to carry 23rd Street under UPRR main line tracks, a BART aerial structure, and adjacent Carlson Boulevard.

The UPRR underpass consists of two single-span CIP/PS box girders with a 40 degree skew. The underpass carries three tracks. The project eliminated a complicated 6-point vehicular intersection crossing the main line tracks.

The Carlson Blvd overcrossing is a 153-foot long, single-span, CIP/PS box girder at 40 degree skew, on seismic isolation bearings, and carries three traffic lanes.

Bridge aesthetics were developed to be in harmony with an existing BART structure. Other  features include a stormwater pump station, traffic signals, street lighting, landscaping, double track railroad shoofly, utility relocations (including petroleum pipelines), and bridge removal.

I-80/Richmond Parkway Interchange and Freeway Widening - Richmond, CA

A-N West prepared roadway and structures PS&E for a new interchange and freeway widening of Interstate 80 between Hilltop Drive and Appian Way Interchanges in Richmond and Pinole, CA.

The overcrossing is a seven-lane, three-span continuous CIP/PS box girder with mid-overcrossing on/off ramp structure carrying HOV traffic lanes. The I-80 widening provides an eight-lane freeway, including two HOV lanes and HOV enforcement lanes.

A Park and Ride Lot, ramp metering provisions, lighting, signing, striping, signals and  landscaping were included in the project.

A-N West coordinated with Caltrans District 4 and Division of Structures for this City of Richmond Department of Public Works project.

Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge at the Children's Museum - San José, CA

The cable-stayed pedestrian and bicycle bridge was designed for the Redevelopment Agency of the City of San Jose. The 120-foot long bridge provides pedestrian access from the San Jose Convention Center across the Guadalupe River to the Children's Discovery Museum. The signature bridge was envisioned to be a functional structure that could enhance the experience associated with the Children's Discovery Museum.

The 55-foot high A-shape pylon is located on the east bank and is fabricated from 12-inch steel pipe. The cable forestays (helical steel wire structural strand) connect the pylon to a support below the twin box girder and composite deck superstructure.

The project involved topographic surveying of the site, an hydraulic analysis of the Guadalupe River, structural analysis and design, and civil engineering design of the bridge approaches.

A-N West was lead firm for the project and prepared contract plans, specifications and construction cost estimates.

Barrett Avenue Bicycle Lanes - Richmond, CA

A-N West prepared the Design Development Memo and the Traffic Memo; and plans, specifications, and estimate for adding Bicycle lanes to Barrett Avenue from Richmond Parkway to San Pablo Avenue, a distance of 2.6 miles. Barrett Avenue is a Major Thoroughfare serving land uses ranging from low-density residential to light industrial and strip commercial. It passes by the Intermodal Transit Station and the Richmond Civic Center. Over the project length there are 13 signalized intersections and the street’s width varies from 40 feet to 94 feet. Bicycle lane improvements included Class II Bikeway striping, signing and pavement markings.

The PS&E have been prepared and approved. The bike lane improvements will be installed incrementally as portions of several upcoming City pavement rehabilitation and resurfacing projects.
